Overview

CO2Scan is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information is used when you use the CO2Scan app or website, and how it is handled.

The short version: we don't collect any personal data, we don't track you, and we don't share anything with third parties for advertising purposes.

Camera access

The CO2Scan app uses your phone's camera solely to scan product barcodes. When you point the camera at a barcode:

No images are captured, stored, or transmitted. Only the barcode number itself is used to look up product data.

Product lookups

When you scan a barcode or search for a product, the barcode number or search term is sent to the CO2Scan server to look up product data and generate a carbon footprint estimate.

No personally identifiable information is included in these requests. We do not log IP addresses or link lookups to individual users.

Third party services

CO2Scan uses the following third party services to provide its core functionality:

Open Food Facts — an open, community-maintained database of food and beauty products. Data is used under the Open Database Licence (ODbL). View their privacy policy.
Anthropic Claude API — used to generate AI-powered carbon footprint estimates. Only product data (not personal data) is sent to this service. View their privacy policy.

Cookies and tracking

The CO2Scan website and app do not use cookies, tracking pixels, or any form of analytics that identifies individual users.

Children's privacy

CO2Scan does not knowingly collect any information from children under the age of 13. The app does not require any personal information to use.

Changes to this policy

If we make any changes to this privacy policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
